Northern Michigan is where I call home. It’s also known as the Tip of the Mitt since we’re at the top of the hand-shaped peninsula.
Northern Michigan is an ideal place to live for people who enjoy more natural surroundings and a milder climate year round, making the Tip of the Mitt a very attractive place to live.
Unfortunately, affordable housing is hard to come by which makes it difficult for people to relocate to the area.
I’ve lived here for 24 years now and can’t see myself anyplace else. Why?
Mild Summers and Cooler Temperatures
- Northern Michigan tends to have cooler summer temperatures, making it ideal for those who want to avoid extreme summer heat.
- I live right above Lake Michigan – and close to a few smaller inland lakes – which creates a cooling effect. This make summers especially refreshing!
Northern Michigan Has Fewer Extreme Weather Events
- This area is safe from hurricanes and tornadoes, compared to other parts of the country. While we see snow and can have the occasional severe winter storm, our area has fewer extreme weather events, especially those that can cause significant damage.
- Northern Michigan has become more appealing to people looking for somewhere that’s less affected by climate change-related extreme weather events.
Seasonal Variety and Outdoor Recreation
- The best thing about Northern Michigan is we have all four seasons! Right now we’re at peak autumn color, then we’ll get right in to snowy winters. Spring is mild with early tulips and trillium in May. The best season is definitely Northern Michigan summers! I love the variety of seasons and the outdoor activities each one brings.
- Northern Michigan is for people who love the outdoors! I love to kayak, hike, camp, and look for rocks at the beach. There are great ski hills and inland lakes for boating. The scenic landscapes, lush forests, and expansive lakeshores are always changing with each season.
Natural Protection from Heat Waves
- The Great Lakes keep the temperatures moderate so summer is mild in Northern Michigan. We don’t get the heat waves that are becoming more common downstate (and across the nation).
- As climate change impacts most areas with prolonged heat, Northern Michigan has a relatively temperate climate. That’s why the area as become more desirable for people seeking cooler and more manageable summer weather.
Clean Air and Access to Nature
- You won’t see much by way of pollution levels in Northern Michigan, especially compared to urban areas downstate. Our clean air and abundance of green spaces provide a healthier environment and a higher quality of life.
- There are mental and physical health benefits to living so close to nature. I have my own trails through our woods, but I’m not far from parks and lakes when I want to get out into nature.
Lower Population Density
- You’ll find that Northern Michigan is generally more sparsely populated than other areas. We have lots of open spaces in quieter, less congested areas.
- This lower density also contributes to a strong sense of community and offers opportunities for a slower-paced lifestyle. I prefer the quiet over the busier metropolitan areas.
Local Agriculture and Freshwater Resources
- This climate supports local agriculture, with many farms producing fruits, vegetables, and other crops that thrive in Northern Michigan’s seasonal conditions. The abundance of locally grown produce, especially in summer and fall, contributes to a healthier lifestyle. We have great farm markets and farm stands where you can buy vegetables picked that day!
- With access to Lake Michigan and other freshwater sources, this area has an abundance of water resources. We don’t worry about water scarcity like other parts of the country.
Northern Michigan is Home
To me, Northern Michigan as an ideal place to live because of its balanced climate, seasonal variety, and overall resilience to certain climate impacts.
I especially love the natural beauty, year round outdoor opportunities, and small-town charm of Harbor Springs and other communities close by.
I count my blessings every day!
