Tunnel of Trees is a scenic drive in along M-119 in Northern Michigan known for its breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding landscape, especially in fall!
My home is in Good Hart right on the Tunnel of Trees. This heritage highway is usually quiet with very little traffic passing by our house.
However, we will start to see lines of traffic on fall weekends when colors start to change.
Sometimes, traffic is bumper to bumper. I recommend you bring lots of patience.
Tunnel of Trees M-119 Heritage Route
The Tunnel of Trees Heritage Route M-119 starts just north of Harbor Springs, Michigan, and heads north to Cross Village, Michigan.
This scenic highway is particularly famous for the canopy of trees that forms a tunnel-like effect, especially during the fall when the foliage changes color.
To experience the Tunnel of Trees, you can start in Harbor Springs and head north on M-119.
The drive takes you through densely forested areas and offers stunning vistas of Lake Michigan.
This heritage route is a popular drive for sightseeing, especially during the fall when the foliage is vibrant and colorful.
However, this is a single lane highway, so please be patient when driving, and always watch for deer and cyclists.
Tunnel of Trees Detours in 2026
Heavy rains in spring caused some damaging washouts along the Tunnel of Trees.
There are two well-marked detours right now – Devil’s Elbow and the creek crossing south of Cross Village.
These detours actually take drivers down my favorite scenic roads.
The vistas on Townline and Island View roads are beautiful, and many people have never seen these views before.

Plan to Go Slow
Keep in mind that the Tunnel of Trees is a seasonal attraction, with the fall months being the most popular time to enjoy the scenic beauty.
Weekends are when we see the most traffic which can be quite heavy at times.
Additionally, the road is winding and narrow in some sections, so drivers are encouraged to exercise caution.
This picturesque journey showcases the natural beauty of Michigan’s landscapes, so slow down and enjoy the ride.
